The Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence is a delight for sculpture lovers. As a result of being in a formidable medieval castle, which served as Florence's prison and barracks, the museum has masterworks by Michelangelo, Donatello, Cellini, and Giambologna. While walking through the stone halls and courtyards, we were transported back to a moment in time when Florence's Renaissance glory was in full blossom, surrounded by many wonderful works of art that shaped the idea of Western art from the mid 15th to mid 17th centuries. Unlike the busy Uffizi, the Bargello was quiet, giving us the chance to appreciate the art itself, rather than the crowds!
