Kailashnath Mahadev Statue

The Kailashnath Mahadev Statue is the highest Shiva statue in the world. 

Kailashnath and Mahadev mean 'master of Mount Kailash,' while Mahadev refers to the deity as 'huge.' It is the world's fortieth-tallest statue, which ranks it four places below the Statue of Liberty. It is around 20 kilometers away from the capital city of Kathmandu and is located in Sanga, which is on the boundary of the districts of Bhaktapur and Kavrepalanchwok in Nepal.

• Learn about how the structure was made:

Copper, zinc, concrete, and steel were the primary materials used to construct this 144-foot-tall statue. The statue's construction began in 2003 and continued until it was finished in 2011, during which time it was regarded as a marvel of Nepalese engineering. It was designed to imitate pictures of the Hindu god Shiva.

• Decipher the symbolic representation of the idol:

It presents the hand gesture (also known as a mudra) that offers blessings of peace. In addition to being accompanied by the unmistakable trident that symbolizes Shiva's three powers as creator, preserver, and destroyer, besides a damaru (drum), which he employs in his dance, Shiva is also adorned with the garlands of the serpent Vasuki, who signifies power and bravery.

The bull Nandi, who stands next to Shiva, represents one of the many incarnations of Shiva known as Pashupati, which translates to ''Lord of Cattle.''

12 Shiva lingams surround the statue. These Shiva lingams depict Shiva's position as a creator and a fertility god.

• Ascent for a closer view and breathtaking views:

Recently, a pedestrian suspension bridge of 738 feet in length was built over the busy Araniko Highway. This bridge was built so that visitors and votaries would have an easier time reaching Shiva's mount. 

The ascent to the statue is more than justified by the breathtaking panoramas of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas that can be enjoyed from the bridge along the way. 

• Consider attending ceremonies on holy days here:

Approximately 5,000 people make their way to the statue during a typical weekday. However, this number dramatically increases on weekends, national holidays, and Hindu festivals.

People come here to worship Shiva and celebrate the Shivaratri and Teej festivals regularly since this building is a temple dedicated to Shiva.
